Wiles wins Galesburg Bob Walter’s Memorial

enry Wiles, from Blanchard, Michigan, won what would be multi-paydays beginning with the $3000 Bob Walter’s Memorial Race, August 19, Saturday evening before a standing room only crowd of very vocal fans at Galesburg before moving on to the Peoria AMA Grand National TT on Sunday where he repeated his 2005 National win. No stranger to the Galesburg short track, Wiles took a second place in the pro-final in 2005 and set the pattern of capturing the Peoria National TT the following day much to the chagrin of the prince of Peoria, Chris Carr.

Twenty-nine pros, based nation wide and even a couple from down under (Australia), came to Galesburg to via for a share of the 3000 dollar purse, and a warm up for the big show Sunday, but with Galesburg’s mounting reputation for having quality facilities and a well tuned organization, the “Big Show” might well be act one Saturday night at the Galesburg Short Track.

Typical Midwest weather hot humid and rainy; didn’t appear too conducive to prime racing until prime-time announcer Bob Fell called on his mojo and the rains stopped and super starter Chad Condreay called the 50cc to the track to start the racing promptly at 3:00 o’clock (track prep included) as advertised.

To borrow from Bob Bargmann, Pekin track announcer, from “The smallest to the tallest” Jake Fell of Galesburg, Illinois, on a 50cc Shaft Yamaha garnered the first trophy of the evening humming (it’s difficult for a 50cc machine to roar) off the grid with Bryce Hazen, Alton Illinois on a Yam, in tow followed by Rooks Derosear, West Burlington, Iowa. They more than made a race of it challenging Jake repeatedly in the early laps only to have Jake pull away for the win

The action heated up in the 65cc class with National number Molly Terry from Creve Coeur, Illinois leading the way with a KTM. But it wasn’t a cake walk, Kole King out of Burlington, Iowa was a constant companion challenging at almost every corner right down to the wire. Molly, with the nerves of a cat burglar, held her lines and kept the throttle on the peg and taking advantage of the weight to horsepower ratio led Kole to the checkers.

Dustin Cassidy, from Walnut, Illinois on a KTM, came out swinging so to speak in the 85cc class after a second in the heat race behind KTM rider Ian Keith of Brimfield, Illinois, Dustin had winning on his mind and Ian was opposed to that mind set; and a lead swapping ensued with Ian going first under the checkers. Logan Vanskike of Monmouth, Illinois was third. Kole King and Molly Terry swapped their 65’s for the bigger motors and continued their paint scraping in the corners. Kole sputtered getting off the grid then settled in working up to a fourth place finish; Molly held on for fifth.

In the 86-160 4/stroke class it was all Mansfield, Illinois Honda rider Joshua Blazek, “rip’n and grip’n “. Jacob Hollenback, Vermont, Illinois was challenging, but just couldn’t get into position to pass, Adam Camp third followed by Tanner Rogers. Jacob McCullough, fifth place and a story in courage, rides with prosthesis fitted on his right arm replacing his hand and wrist missing due to a birth defect.

“I don’t miss what I never had,” said a teenage philosophical McCullough. Jake’s prosthesis, designed by Mert Lawell, former National #One, is a break-a-way device so if Jake unloads, which has happened (but rarely does) man and machine can part company. Jake in addition to competitive racing, gives inspirational talks to High School students. Way to go Jake.

The 505cc class almost went off without a hitch but Dave Deweese goosed his KTM a millisecond too soon and was moved to the rear of the grid for his infraction. Lance Kent, from Minier, Illinois with a cool head and a steady throttle hand was first to enter turn one and carried it thru to the checkers despite the efforts of Muscatine, Iowa’s Chaz Parker to execute a pass for the lead. Richard Kent was third.

The Open Amateur class rocked; Cory Texter of Willow Street, Pennsylvania with superb technique maintained his controlled power slides from turn one to the checkers even with the track getting a little rough as the program wore on. Kyle Snyder, of Taylorville, Illinois Yamaha mounted and Randy Cassidy, out of Ohio, Illinois, was at war for second and third. Cassidy bobbled on a rough patch in turn three and Justin Hanna of Belleville, Illinois slid pass for the third slot behind Snyder’s Yamaha held the position to the flag.

Fittingly the Brakeless class, a carry-over from the days when all flat track races were run without brakes, until the AMA in their all knowing wisdom deemed it safer to have some method of stopping a machine other than coasting to a stop or bouncing off of walls, people or anything else that got in the way permitted brakes to be installed. William Berger, from Calamus, Iowa, wasn’t interested in stopping and kept the throttled pinned for his taking of the checkers, Zachary Cassidy, from Walnut, Illinois #109 and Michael Cassidy also from Walnut, Illinois, slash 109, made it a family thing going 2-3 in the above order. Stanley Camp was fourth with John Brill filling out the top five.

Galesburg’s next event, motocross, will be on September 10. Treat yourself to a day in the fall sunshine, we hope.
